Clocks for Sale – Are you confused?

Since Clocks for Sale is here to educate as well as to feature beautiful and functional clocks for your home, we want to make sure you understand the terms used by manufacturers and retailers.

Though the images that come to mind of longcase clocks are usually of the traditional grandfather clocks that were manufactured in England during the mid-1600’s, the terms floor clock, longcase clock and grandfather clock can all refer to clocks of more contemporary design and modern manufacture as well.

Whether contemporary or traditional, for the most part these terms are interchangeable with a few exceptions. While longcase clocks, longcase grandfather clocks, floor clocks, tall-case clocks and grandmother clocks all refer to the same type of clock…freestanding and pendulum or weight driven. The main difference is in the height…

Grandfather clocks are generally 6-8 feet tall.

Grandmother clocks are around 5 feet tall.

Granddaughter clocks are under 5 feet.
