How Pendulum Clocks Work

Grandfather clocks and other longcase clocks are pendulum clocks which use weights and gears to pendulum clockaccurately tell time. It really is genius.

The key components of a pendulum clock are…

1. A weight or spring to provide the energy that turns the hands of the clock.

2  A gear train that keeps the clock running without having to rewind often.

3. The escapement which regulates the speed to insure accuracy.

4. The hand gear train which controls the rate at which the minute and hour hands turn.

5. A setting mechanism that allows the clock to be rewound.

6. The clock face which records how often the escapement has rotated thus showing the time.

Buying a Grandfather Clock? Pay Attention to Size Before You Buy

The other day, I was invited into a home with a beautiful grandfather clock sitting in the living grandfather clockroom.

It was a beautiful clock but it looked all wrong. Why? It barely fit. There was maybe a half inch between the finial at the top and the ceiling. If I could have taken a picture without offending the homeowner, I would have just to show you how bad a great clock can look in the wrong room.

When shopping for any grandfather clock, you want to be shopping for one that will look like it was made for your home rather than one that’s just being scrunched into the space you have.

It is so easy to fall in love with a clock only to get it home and realize it looks terrible. I don’t care how much you love it, don’t buy it if it doesn’t fit.

Clocks for Sale would like to share the following guidelines to help you get this major purchase right.

1. Before you do anything else, measure your ceiling height.

2. Allow at least 8-12 inches between the top of the clock and the ceiling.

3. Check the measurements of the clocks for sale that you’re considering.

4. Beware of sellers who misrepresent their clocks. Don’t take their word for it, get the measurements. One retailer was recently seen advertising a 76 1/2 inch as a grandmother clock. Based on it’s height, I’d say that’s a grandfather clock.

Remember…
Granddaughter clocks are typically under 5 feet.
Grandmother clocks are over 5 feet.
Grandfather clocks are over 6 feet.
